Bel Marra Health, well known for offering high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional supplements, has commented on a recent study out of Rush University Medical Center that shows daily physical activity can lower the risk for Alzheimer’s disease, even for those over 80 years old.

The research, conducted by neurological researchers from Rush University Medical Center, and published in the online issue of Neurology, measured total daily exercise and non-exercise physical activity. The researchers asked 716 older individuals (average age of 82) without dementia to wear a device called an actigraph, which monitors activity, on the participants non-dominant wrist for 10 days.

Lead author of the study Dr. Aron S. Buchman commented on the results, “the study indicates that all physical activities including exercise as well as other activities such as cooking, washing the dishes, and cleaning are associated with a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease."

CEO of Bel Marra Health Jim Chiang chimed in on the impressive findings saying, “statistics are showing that the amount of senior aged North Americans could double by 2030, so if there is a way to easily modify an aspect of an the seniors’ lifestyle, then this really does have important ramifications.”

The study reported that those participants in the bottom 10 percent of physical activity levels were almost 2.8 times more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease as people in the top percent of physical activity intensity.
