London theatre breaks specialist, Superbreak, has reported a record sales week for Matilda the Musical packages, with online revenue growth of +44% week-on-week following the prestigious Laurence Olivier Awards ceremony last week.
The Laurence Olivier awards are one of the highlights of the theatre calendar and took place at the esteemed Royal Opera House on 15 April 2012. Matilda picked up a record breaking seven Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, Best Actress in a Musical and Best Actor in a Musical. In the five days following on from the awards evening Superbreak reported a +119% online booking uplift for Matilda theatre breaks with 76% of customers choosing to travel the weekend after the May Bank Holiday weekend.
Since transferring to London’s Cambridge theatre, Matilda the Musical has attracted millions of people to the West End and has extended its booking period though until the 17 February 2013. Superbreak customers can now book Matilda theatre packages from £68pp, including tickets to see the show at the Cambridge Theatre and overnight accommodation in a choice of central London hotels. Booking data shows that customers who have booked to see the musical with the tour operator have chosen to package their Matilda tickets with the popular Imperial Hotel Group, who offer a range of hotels near the West End, as well as the four star Cavendish London.
In 2011, 54,570 passengers travelled with Superbreak on a theatre break, with family favourites the Lion King, Wizard of Oz and Shrek the Musical featuring within the operator’s top 10 top theatre shows sold. Superbreak hope that the recent press exposure Matilda has received will help highlight the shows’ family appeal. As usual, all Superbreak customers have the option to add first or standard class rail and a range of sightseeing tours and attractions to their London weekend breaks.
Superbreak Programme Manager David Thomas commented: "I saw Matilda The Musical in a snowbound Stratford Upon Avon and gave the show such a resounding standing ovation that the RSC were still talking about it at The Olivier’s on Sunday. Matilda was such a totally captivating experience that I was dreading seeing it again in London - in case some of the magic had worn off in its travels South. Quite the opposite. If the Stratford production was a gorgeous water colour, the London production was the ravishing oil painting - and nothing less than a masterpiece.”
