Chicago, IL (PRWEB) April 26, 2012

In celebration of World IP Day 2012, Ocean Tomo, the leading Intellectual Capital Merchant Banc® firm, today released the results of their annual Patent Quality Inventor Study, ranking the top three inventors within four technology sectors: wireless, life science, industrials and semiconductors.

According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), World IP Day 2012 “focuses on Visionary Innovators – individuals whose ingenuity and artistry have broken molds, opened new horizons and made a lasting impact.”

The U.S. has transitioned to an innovation based economy with intellectual property (IP) taking center stage. Eighty percent (80%) of company value is comprised of intangible assets, according to the Ocean Tomo Intangible Asset Market Value Study.

“2011 was the best year on record for IP transactions, and 2012 is set to continue the upward trend,” stated Dr. Elvir Causevic, Head of Ocean Tomo’s Strategy Practice. “Prolific innovators who protect their inventions with high quality patents will be key drivers of exceptional economic value in the global economy.”

Ocean Tomo’s Patent Quality Inventor Study:

Requiring a minimum of five issued patents, the Patent Quality Inventor Study ranking is based upon the average patent IPQ® score for each inventor’s 2011 issued and active U.S. patents within noted U.S. Patent Office Classifications. Ocean Tomo IPQ scores objectively rate patent assets based on a proven statistical methodology, with a median score being 100.

In wireless, the top rated inventor with nine patents in USPC 370 is Joseph J. Kubler. These patents have an average IPQ score of 195.7, which puts his patents in the top 0.53% of active U.S. utility patents.

In life science, Craig A. Weaver is the top rated inventor. The five patents that fall within USPC 435 have an average IPQ score of 223.1. This average lands his patents in the top .07% of all active U.S. utility patents.

In industrials, David R. Hall was the top inventor with seven patents in USPC 324 and 060. Having an average IPQ score of 138.1 places those seven patents in the top 9.86% of all active U.S. utility patents.

In semiconductors, Charles W. C. Lin is the top inventor with 10 patents in USPC 438 and 257. With an average IPQ score of 189.4, his 10 patents rank among the top 2.32% of all active U.S. utility patents.

A summary of the study results is available for download at OceanTomo.com.

Dr. Causevic added, “These outstanding inventors, competing in crowded and complex technology fields, have secured the highest quality patents ahead of their peers. This is an honor these innovators should be very proud of, and be recognized for. This study is one such attempt at objective recognition of their contribution.”

About IPQ® Scores
The IPQ score objectively rates patent assets based on a proven statistical methodology. The IPQ score is mathematically determined from the identified metrics for each patent using our patented and proprietary rating system.

The IPQ score has a median of 100. Patent assets with higher IPQ scores are statistically more likely to generate economic returns. As a person's credit score is used by banks and lenders to determine financial risk, a patent asset's IPQ score is used by IP professionals, investors, and corporate strategic planners to determine value and quality.

IPQ scores are unique to each particular patent examined and are updated monthly. Scores are based on certain identified predictive variables determined to have statistically significant correlation to patent quality and value.
