Supporting patients with information on their hospital choice is a key driver to improve care. However, information on hospitals' success rates can be difficult to use when patients are overwhelmed and anxious. Konnectology's patient-centric approach that engages patients with empathy and context on how to use information on hospital success is shared.

Dr. Constantia Petrou, founder and CEO of Culmini, Inc. presented at Stanford’s Healthcare Innovation Summit on putting information on care in the hands of patients. She was one of the panelists discussing “Better Outcomes, Better Value: Does Transparency Have the Power to Heal?” on April 25, 2012.

Dr. Petrou has highlighted the company’s patient-centric approach in its Konnectology guides that help patients and families with what to do and where to go for best care. “Consumers are healthy and don’t want to be bothered with medical issues. It is patients, when sick and at the time of treatment that need information on where they can get the best possible care” explained Dr. Petrou. This means that information has to take into account patients’ perceptions of hospitals and doctors, and their anxiety as they make critical decisions. Dr. Petrou shared examples of how the kidney transplant and dialysis guides use empathy and embed facts within the process to treatment to engage patients.

For those who care about improving patient care, transparency in a way that puts information on hospital success directly in patients’ hands to help them with their choice can be a powerful incentive for providers to improve.
