Treadmill desks: an innovative approach to health or a passing fad? Researchers at Iowa State University’s Nutrition and Wellness Research Center decided to put this question to the test. They recently released results of a campus wide study designed to evaluate the effectiveness of TrekDesk Treadmill Desks for active work among university students and faculty members previously entrapped in sedentary work environments.
The study, led by Dr. Gregory Welk, Director of Clinical Research and Community Outreach, covered a diverse population of departments and offices: Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (VPRED), College of Human Sciences (CHS) Dean’s Office, President’s Office, College of Design, Bioeconomy Institute (BEI), Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), Center for Industrial Research and Service (CIRAS), ISU Dining, Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) Student Academic Services, Student Health, Virtual Reality Applications Center (VRAC), Library, Department of Residence (DOR), History, Sociology, Mathematics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Plant Sciences Institute (PSI), Natural Resource Ecology and Management (NREM) and Kinesiology.
One hundred and seventy one participants (130 females and 41 males) were recruited to the study and 99 participants responded to the survey about their experience regarding the Trekdesk treadmill desk.
Results indicate that a majority of survey respondents 73.4% report that they have had a favorable experience using the TrekDesk, 81% are likely to recommend the TrekDesk and 79% agree that the university should consider getting TrekDesks for their employees.
