Nashville, TN (PRWEB) April 30, 2012
The Tennessee car accident attorneys at the law firm of Michael D. Ponce & Associates, a team of Tennessee personal injury attorneys who represent clients injured in crashes across the state, hereby alert the public of two new bills that are working their ways through the Tennessee legislature that would affect how police handle the aftermath of Tennessee car accidents involving motorists who do not have insurance or driver’s licenses.
Specifically, House Bill 2466 would require drivers who are involved in serious Tennessee car accidents where at least one injury results to be arrested by the police officer responding to the scene if that driver does not have a driver’s license or proof of insurance when requested to produce them. This marks a departure from the existing law that led to punishment by a misdemeanor against that motorist.
In addition, House Bill 2678 would set higher bail amounts for people who are arrested under House Bill 2466 and who are found to be in the United States illegally. House Bill 2466 has passed both state houses and is awaiting the signature of the governor. House Bill 2466 is passing through its subcommittee and would be seen as a companion bill with House Bill 2466.
These bills are being offered in part because of the overall statistics regarding Tennessee auto accidents. Every year, more than 1,000 people are killed and more than 50,000 people are injured because of these collisions according to the statistics kept by the State of Tennessee. These statistics have remained largely consistent in recent years. The Tennessee auto accident lawyers at Michael D. Ponce & Associates advise those motorists who do not have insurance to purchase coverage as soon as possible.
