The American Nuclear Society (ANS) is sponsoring and participating in the largest celebration of science and engineering in the United States—the 2nd annual USA Science & Engineering Festival, ANS President Eric P. Loewen, PhD, announced today. The Festival Expo will be Saturday and Sunday, April 28-29, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.
“The festival encourages young students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” said Loewen. “ANS members will be on-hand to explain fascinating career options in nuclear science and technology—and the benefits these technologies hold for humankind.”
The Festival Expo—with its fascinating array of hands-on exhibits and stage shows, coupled with up-close interaction with renowned innovators and top research and celebrities in science and engineering—has rapidly evolved into a must-see event for families, students and others across the country and globe. The American Nuclear Society exhibit has the theme "Applying Nuclear Technologies in Our Radioactive World" and will be located at Hall B, Booth Number 2653, in the Washington Convention Center.
Several local ANS members will help host the exhibit by showing young people how Geiger counters are used to detect radiation and explaining different applications of nuclear science and engineering. When asked about the exhibit, Loewen said, “The American Nuclear Society is proud to be a platinum sponsor of the Festival Expo to help inspire and educate young minds through hands-on exercises that demystify nuclear technology for kids and motivate them to learn more about nuclear applications.”
Established in 1954, ANS is a nonprofit professional organization of engineers and scientists devoted to the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology. Its 11,600 members come from diverse technical backgrounds covering the full range of engineering disciplines as well as the physical and biological sciences. They are advancing the application of these technologies to improve the lives of the world community through national and international enterprise within government, academia, research laboratories and private industry.
The USA Science & Engineering Festival is the country's only national science festival, and was developed to increase public awareness of the importance of science and to encourage youth to pursue careers in science and engineering by celebrating science in much the same way as we celebrate Hollywood celebrities, professional athletes and pop stars. Lockheed Martin is again the presenting host of the USA Science & Engineering Festival and is joined by many other Festival sponsors and partners. The USA Science & Engineering Festival is a grassroots collaboration of over 500 of the United States leading science and engineering organizations.
