“James’ future is brighter than it has ever been. He says it is important not to give up hope, and he and his sister have made a formidable team. We are honored to have played a role in his recovery."
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 30, 2012
SYNERGY HomeCare of Metro Atlanta is proud to be part of a client’s quick and inspiring recovery. After a year of rapid progress, brain injury patient James Bryant and his sister Gracie Kelley attribute recent recovery to compassionate care from SYNERGY HomeCare caregiver LaJeanna McKnight.
When James Bryant sustained a traumatic brain injury, he was left without part of his skull and bed bound. As James was weak on his right side and had aphasia, his sister Gracie Kelley stepped in to help him with daily living tasks. After months of caring for James, Gracie found a program to receive professional care James needed. Through the Veteran’s Administration’s Home Health Aid Program, James and Gracie were introduced to SYNERGY HomeCare of Metro Atlanta.
Upon first meeting James and Gracie, SYNERGY HomeCare of Metro Atlanta owner Nancy Bour and caregiver LaJeanna McKnight were especially interested in James’ recovery. They were delighted to help James and provide respite to Gracie. Though James’ physical therapy options were limited, LaJeanna worked with James three days per week, initiating simple range of motion exercises with his right arm and leg. Success came after six weeks. LaJeanna reported to Nancy that James could move the limbs on the right side of his body by himself.
“LaJeanna’s smile, warmth, compassion, intelligence and belief in James worked their magic”, says Nancy Bour. “She was the spark that ignited a chain reaction.”
After seeing James’ potential to regain mobility, Gracie could see new determination and hope in her brother’s eyes, and completed the required paperwork to surgically replace James’ cranium in order for him to obtain full physical therapy. As James underwent medical procedures and rehabilitation, Gracie contacted SYNERGY HomeCare of Metro Atlanta to report James’ forward progress.
In the meantime, caregiver LaJeanna McKnight nominated Gracie for the Arms Around Family Caregivers“Pillar of Strength” Award, which honors family caregivers and provides them with respite care. Gracie was selected as an honorary winner, and was able to receive 20 hours of non medical care from SYNERGY HomeCare.
Nine months after his surgery, James has regained his ability to walk with the assistance of a walker. He demonstrates this with pride as he pushes Gracie around in a wheelchair. The family looks forward to James increasing strength and mobility. His goal is to once again drive a car and speak to other veterans who have brain injuries.
“James’ future is brighter than it has ever been. He says it is important not to give up hope, and he and his sister have made a formidable team. We are honored to have played a role in his recovery and are ecstatic to witness such an amazing transformation.”
