In order to find an objective way of comparing attorneys within the legal field, Martindale-Hubbell® established the peer review ratings™ system. Included are lawyers from the United States and Canada who have been admitted to the bar at least three years previously. It includes members of all types of law, from bankruptcy to criminal defense, personal injury to divorce, in different geographic areas.
There are two main categories for this rating system: ethical standard and legal ability. The combination of the rating in each of these categories gives an overall snapshot of the caliber of the individual. However, before the attorney can even be rated on their skill, they first need to meet the criteria of passing the ethical standards. This is based on following the standards of the legal profession as well as reliability and diligence in their interaction with clients. If they reach the “Very High” standard set in this category, the attorney in question can then proceed to be rated in the legal ability section.
In legal ability, there are five categories in which the legal representative will be evaluated and given a rating of 1 to 5 with 5 being the highest. First is legal knowledge. This must have a thorough understanding of the specific laws that govern their geographic region and their area of practice. The second category is analytical capabilities. This extends past mere knowledge and extends to determine whether or not they are able to put it into practice in real-world situation. The third category of judgment is similar in that they know what the important factors of a case are. Fourth is their ability to clearly and persuasively communicate on behalf of their clients and fifth is their experience in that specific area of law.
Understanding how vigorous and detailed this rating system is only gives credibility to the already well-respected law firm of Hager & Schwartz, P.A. Attorney Brett M.
