After an abbreviated worship service, approximately 60 members of the La Mesa Church of Christ fanned out on Sunday, April 22nd, to complete various local service projects.

For the fifth year in a row, a local La Mesa church dedicated Sunday morning to community service.

“Faith in Action”, the name of the initiative, was designed to turn a typical Sunday morning on its head, moving the church’s members out of the pews and sending them out on the street to participate in various projects to benefit La Mesa and the community at large.

After an abbreviated worship service, approximately 60 members of the La Mesa Church of Christ fanned out on Sunday, April 22nd, to complete various projects which the church’s leadership had designated for “Faith in Action” Sunday. The service projects ranged from trash pickup up and down Jackson Dr., to landscaping and beautification projects, to beach cleanup efforts at Mission Beach, and the completion of a care package to the church’s sister congregation in El Salvador. Two more teams visited local convalescent homes to provide conversation, encouragement, and a friendly smile to the homes’ residents.

Many of the church’s youth group members participated in the beach cleanup initiative at Mission Beach, while members who cleaned up along Jackson Dr. collected over 10 large bags of litter and debris.

“I found the time very rewarding,” stated Dr. Richard Henegar, one of the congregation’s elders. “The day was not only an opportunity to give back to our community of La Mesa; but also offered us the opportunity to strengthen the community of the church. After all, that's what "Faith in Action" Sunday is all about—a win, win situation.”

“Faith in Action” Sunday has become an integral part of the La Mesa Church of Christ’s mission to serve the community in which they are located, as well as the world at large.

“We have several more service initiatives planned for 2012,” stated Graham Clifford, the church’s involvement minister and architect of “Faith in Action” Sunday. “Some of our upcoming projects include the creation and distribution of healthcare supply packages for AIDS caregivers in Africa (in conjunction with World Vision), the creation and distribution of care kits (basic household supplies, school supplies, food, and medical supplies) to families in Colonet, Baja, Mexico, and the Angel Tree ministry at Christmastime, which provides Christmas presents for local children whose parents are incarcerated.”
