At Burgess and Mason Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, Drs. Jerry Burgess, D.D.S. and Scott Mason, D.D.S. now provide oral DNA screenings to test for both the cause of and genetic risk factors for periodontal diseases.

"Bacterial oral DNA screenings are good for patients who already have, or think they may have periodontal infection," explains Dr. Scott Mason. "Patients with ongoing periodontal disease, active and former tobacco users, diabetics, and those with a history of cardiovascular disease are all very sensitive to dangerous oral infections. Because the mouth is a gateway to food and air in the body, infections of the mouth can spread through many avenues to affect other parts of the body. This DNA test identifies the bacteria responsible for disease."

For patients who want to see what their chances of having periodontal disease are, Burgess and Mason Cosmetic and Family Dentistry also provides oral DNA genetic testing.

"Genetic testing helps us address preventive care for patients on an individualized basis," says Dr. Jerry Burgess. "People with weak immune systems and people who have lost teeth due to periodontal disease do not want their condition to worsen, and knowing how they are going to respond to treatment is a big help. Some people receive periodontal disease therapy with little or no results – oral DNA screenings can help explain why."

Periodontal disease has been mischaracterized by society as a 'harmless' or 'natural' infection. Recent studies have shown it to be nothing of the sort, attributing the condition to heart disease and even dangerous blood clots in the vascular system.

Both bacterial and genetic oral DNA testing are available at Burgess and Mason Cosmetic and Family Dentistry.
