IBOPE Inteligência: Eight in 10 Believe Wal-Mart Mexican Bribe Allegations; Three Quarters Think it’s Common Practice for US Companies

One in Six Less Likely to Shop at Wal-Mart as Result

US adults aware of allegations that Wal-Mart bribed Mexican officials for permission to build stores in their country, overwhelmingly believe the transgressions likely took place, a new IBOPE Inteligência survey finds.

The interactive survey finds that 83% believe the bribery allegations likely, while just 12% think them unlikely. Furthermore, 75% of all respondents think it is commonplace for US companies to bribe foreign officials in order to build facilities in new markets, 37% of which consider it “very common.”

As a result of the Wal-Mart scandal, 16% of those aware of the allegations say it makes them less likely to shop at the big box chain. That rate is halved among those who consider themselves weekly Wal-Mart shoppers, with just 7% saying it would affect their shopping frequency. This group is also more doubtful about the truth of the charges, as 29% say they are very likely true, compared to 48% overall. However, 54% of weekly Wal-Mart shoppers say it is somewhat likely Wal-Mart committed bribery.

The poll also finds 63% are very or somewhat aware of the bribery allegations, and a majority of all respondents have a favorable opinion of Wal-Mart (53%).

IBOPE Inteligência conducted an online survey of 2,102 US adults. The margin of error is +/- 2.3 percentage points. A sampling of IBOPE Inteligência's online panel, which is representative of the adult population of the US, was invited to participate April 26-30. Slight weights were added to region, party, age, race, religion, gender and education to more accurately reflect the population.
