Burlington Press is a commercial printing and marketing services company. The changing business landscape forced this small company to take a hard look at its core values in order to change the way they do business or risk becoming a statistic on the list of failed businesses.
The company was founded in 1993 as a local printer and became a successful small business in Burlington County, New Jersey. Two market factors started to put this success at risk. The first was the rise of the Internet as an effective means of marketing business. On-line communication has reduced the needs of businesses to print marketing materials. The second was the recent rise of on-line printing firms who can print for very low prices.
Richard Lewis, general manager of Burlington Press said, “These two factors coupled with the declining economy forced us to take a long hard look at what we do to help our clients.” The competitive pressure of online printers and the fact that there is less printing being done has put many traditional printers out of business over the last few years. In the case of Burlington Press they examined exactly why they were in business in the first place. Lewis said, “We realized that we really are a communications company and if our clients are communicating differently we need to be able to offer the services to support that. It is a simple evolution of business.”
In addition to graphic design, printing and direct mail services, Burlington Press started Burlington Press Web Services which specializes in website design and development and online marketing. “It is a no-brainer,” said Lewis. “Most of what we print and mail drives customers to a website, so why not offer that same marketing savvy to develop effective websites? It is all part of the evolution of marketing.”
To combat the price competition from on-line printers the company had to define its position as a commercial printing company. On-line printers charge less because they offer less. Not only do they offer a limited number of products, but their processes are so automated that an actual human doesn’t look over the computer file that is uploaded for printing. As a result, it is common for print jobs to be delivered wrong. If there are errors in the original computer file those errors will show up in the finished product. Not just typos, but layout problems, low quality graphics and a whole host of other things that can make a finished brochure, flyer, business card, etc. look unprofessional.
“We realized that our company isn’t really in business to simply print things for our customer,” said Lewis “Our customers want results from the things they print and it is our job to help them get those results.” Burlington offers services such as graphic design, direct mail and other marketing services in order to ensure the success of a marketing campaign. Adding other online services like website design and keeping up with the latest print technology simply helps Burlington Press increase the success of a client’s marketing by integrating it with every channel that a business uses to communicate. Lewis said, “Our best customers always have counted on us more as communication consultants than printers. As printing and communication becomes more sophisticated, so will our company’s offerings.
Business, especially small business, needs evolve in order to survive. Today’s marketing environment is doing more and more to allow small business to compete effectively with big business. It is just necessary for smaller businesses to effectively use the tools that are available.
Burlington Press is a leading area provider of marketing services to small and medium sized businesses Richard and Vivian Lewis founded the company in 1993. Their core business is graphic communication. Richard Lewis, general manager says, “We started out as a printing company, but as more ways of communication evolved over the years we added services in order to meet the graphic communications needs of our customers.” In addition to traditional printing services, the company also provides website design and development, email marketing, search engine optimization and other on-line and traditional marketing services. Lewis says, “We believe in the success of small business and provide effective marketing tools in order to ensure that success.”
