Removing unwanted body fat without going under the knife sounds like a patient’s dream, but is it just that? Experts at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) in Vancouver, Canada, will discuss how well non-invasive body contouring procedures really work to tighten the skin, reduce the appearance of cellulite, and diminish fat. “The Emerging Trend of Non-Invasive Body Contouring-Is it Time For You to Buy In?” will moderated by Leo R. McCafferty, MD, and feature panelists Chris Inglefield, MD, Mark L. Jewell, MD, Brian M. Kinney, MD, and W. Grant Stevens, MD.
“We’ve put together plastic surgeons who have a lot of experience with non-invasive technologies, and we plan to push them a little bit to find out what is really happening with non-invasive body contouring and to see if these are options for our members and our patients,” said Dr. McCafferty, of Pittsburgh, PA. “Some of these procedures have been discussed at past meetings, but we now have a couple more years of data and information under our belt.”
Non-invasive body contouring procedures have received much media attention over the past few years, generating a great deal of interest from plastic surgeons and patients.
"Non-invasive body contouring is the rage! Who wouldn’t want to be thinner without surgery, with no downtime and with limited expense and effort?" said Dr. Stevens, of Marina del Rey, CA.
The panelists will cover the efficacy, safety, and outcomes of different non-invasive body contouring technologies, including; Coolsculpt, Liposonix, Injection Lipolysis, and UltraShape. Each panelist will cover one of the various technologies; everything from freezing fat to fat reducing injections will be discussed and debated.
“Non-invasive body contouring with high-intensity focused ultrasound offers patients an excellent option for modest improvements in body contour—from one to two inches in waist circumference—without a surgical procedure,” said Dr. Jewell, of Eugene, OR. “This technology was first presented at the ASAPS meeting in Boston last year and is the subject of two peer-reviewed, clinical papers that I co-authored and were published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal in 2011.
“I’ll be discussing the scientific principles and FDA clinical trial data on submental injection lipolysis versus the promotional marketing to millions of women with cellulite of mesotherapy for melting fat,” said Dr. Kinney, of Beverly Hills, CA. “Is it too good to be true? Perhaps, for now, but the state of the art IS getting better and better.”
