Kingston Hospital NHS Trust (KHT) is a single site, medium sized District General Hospital, located in Kingston-Upon-Thames, which provides a full range of diagnostic and treatment services to approximately 320,000 people locally on behalf of their commissioners within South West London and North Surrey.
BigHand, the leading provider of digital dictation and speech recognition technology to the UK Healthcare market, was selected by KHT to implement their software trust-wide in support of 300 Authors and Secretaries. Working towards achieving Foundation status and the Department of Health’s Commissioning for Quality and Innovation (CQUIN) initiatives, KHT is looking to deliver a five day turnaround time for GP letters arising from outpatient clinic attendances at the same time as improving the efficiency of the associated processes. The Trust has identified digital dictation software as key to these goals.
Prior to digital dictation, KHT clinicians used a mixture of analogue tape and some digital recording to capture letter content. However delays occurred at a number of points in the workflow, including timely delivery of dictations for transcription and of completed letters for review and sign off. With the introduction of the BigHand voice productivity solution, KHT will now experience;
- a more flexible method of dictation e.g. inserting, deleting and remote working
- improved efficient and effective use of secretarial typing capacity and / or outsourced transcription services.
- improved workload management, performance measurement and control
- reduction of information governance risks (e.g. associated with lost, broken or inaudible tapes requiring re-dictation at a later date. Failures to produce letters for every clinic attendance etc.).

BigHand were awarded onto the Framework as the highest ranked supplier following a full Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) procurement process, which included evaluations assessing Financial Stability, Professional Capability, Technical Capability, Experience and Value for Money.
