Waste and recycling trucks demand a rugged display solution that can endure the most rigorous operational environments.

General Dynamics Canada and FleetMind Solutions, Inc., have partnered to provide waste and recycling companies with an integrated fleet management system using the new General Dynamics’ GD4010 ruggedized computing smart display to host FleetMind’s software. The system will provide drivers and back-office systems users with unprecedented information about a truck’s load-weight, route status, service completion, vehicular telemetry, driver activities and other information vital to optimizing fleet costs and productivity.

“Waste and recycling trucks demand a rugged display solution that can endure the most rigorous operational environments,” said Martin Demers, CEO of FleetMind. “The GD4010 will provide our waste and recycling customers with the most robust and toughest onboard computing platform in the market in a complete package that is both fully integrated and easy to install.”

The ruggedized computing displays are equipped with a touch-screen, multiple video and audio input channels, streaming and snapshot video capture, multiple vehicle-bus interfaces, 4G and Wi-Fi communications, VoIP capabilities, shock detection circuitry, multiple I/O ports, a solid state hard drive and the latest in mobile computing processors. Developed for ground combat vehicles operating in harsh military environments, these enhanced product features reduce the requirement for multiple individual components, while contributing to an overall savings in size, weight and in-cab real-estate.

David Ibbetson, general manager for General Dynamics Canada said, “Leveraging our expertise in delivering vehicle computing solutions to the military, General Dynamics Canada was able to provide this low-risk, highly durable solution to address FleetMind's requirements.”

The GD4010 is part of the General Dynamics tactical computing and display product line for vehicle and handheld applications. The computing display manages a wide range of inputs from a vehicle’s on-board systems including cameras, scales, RFID readers, tire pressure and fuel monitoring as well as other devices. Rugged enough to withstand the most demanding operating environments, the 10.4-inch touch screen display is daylight viewable so operators easily see the displayed information in even the brightest sunlight and snow-glare conditions. The GD4010 meets the MIL810 standards for shock and vibration as well as IP65 standards for dust and waterproofing.

Waste collection vehicles are typically equipped with cameras, GPS and other sensors that monitor truck performance. The combined FleetMind and GD4010 solution allows drivers to see what material is being loaded, how much it weighs and much more for immediate detection of issues such as potential contamination or overweight situations. To improve fuel conservation and maintenance functions, the system collects telemetry data and feeds it back to the FleetMind FleetLink server and customer’s back-office for analysis and reporting. The system also provides dispatch with real-time insights into a truck’s location, route status and customer service verification.

FleetMind will demonstrate the GD4010 in Booth #16013 at Waste Expo 2012. To book an appointment, contact: dpadilla(at)fleetmind(dot)com
