Review: Day one of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia and already one of this season’s biggest secrets is out: how to wear a stunning Camilla kaftan.

With a packed audience, iconic Australian designer Camilla Franks http://www.camilla.com.au was the main event on day one of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.

The kaftan queen showcased her Spring/Summer 2012/13 Gypset collection, inspired by a mishmash of gypsy and jet set lifestyles.

The show was an array of colourful, contemporary looks and featured some new additions to the kaftan including shorts, blouses, jump suits and swimwear. There was even a ‘mantan’ – a kaftan designed specifically for guys.

From the vibrant, bustling streets of India via North Africa and the Far East, landing finally in the relaxed glamour of Australian cocktail hour, it was a voyage through the most diverse cultures, all beautifully styled by the renowned Mark Vassallo. http://www.markvassallo.tv

With pulled back hair and fresh faces, strutting to a soundtrack was decidedly ‘now’, the models looked beautiful, but what really caught the eye was the clever coupling of kaftans with statement jewellery created by Perth-based designer Sophie Kyron. http://www.sophiekyron.com.au

In keeping with the current vogue for colour blocking and clashing, it was an ingenious move to heap on the accessories, completing each outfit with Kyron’s custom-made exotic pieces. Following on the heels of the recent minimal trend, the layers of bold jewellery against the bright prints really wowed the crowd.

Camilla fans here in Australia have known it for a long time, and now the rest of the world is catching on – the quirky kaftan is about to hit the mainstream.

With celebrity fans including Oprah Winfrey, Beyonce and Gwen Stefani, it’s only a matter of time before Franks’ wearable collection goes global. And there’s no doubt this latest collaboration with Kyron and styling by Vassallo has given the designer a fresh, fashion-forward edge.

For fashionistas, the lesson is clear: take your lead from Australian fashion’s hottest collaborators and ditch the simple accessories. Clash and mishmash your colours and embrace bold jewellery for a look that’s contemporary, relaxed and glamorous.

Fashion week’s not over yet, but there’s no doubt that right now kaftan queen Camilla wears the crown, which was probably made by Kryon.
