When asked what inspired his new collection, “As I Write These Words” (published by iUniverse), Samir Georges found the question hard to answer.
“What inspired me wasn’t just a single person, close family, or grand events,” Georges answers. “It was all events, as small as lounging in a pool, and it was all people, as unfamiliar as a stranger passing me by. My inspiration is the gap between you and I. It is the pleasure I feel from a moment cherished, and the angst I feel from a moment regretted.”
Georges, a passionate and avid writer, pours each of these events into the poems featured in “As I Write These Words”. Every poem in the collection seeks to take the reader on a journey with Georges. This very personal collection of poetry, begun by Georges at the age of 10 and completed on his 20th birthday, offers an invitation to travel across the tapestry of emotion and experiences he weaves.
While the subject of each poem varies, there is a guiding theme that encapsulates the collection.
“The one theme that guides them would have to be an attempt at honest reflection, and the sharing of the understanding that it has yielded. The theme of this book inquiry,” Georges writes, “is searching, finding and reflecting.”
Raised in a culture that values and nurtures poetry, Georges first began writing poetry in his native language without any training. His need for expression spurred him on.
“It is in my poetry that I can find my honesty; it is in my poetry that I can bridge that difficulty and truly share.”
