Dissent – the ability to buck the system and go one’s own way – is the “most valuable and unappreciated commodity on the market,” writes the author of this unique new book. Those who haven’t gone along with the system have propelled evolution and change, resulting in today’s society. Taking on politics with a distinctive literary style, the book offers a new way of thinking about debate and dissension.
“Syzygy: The Third Alternative – a Political-Literary Essay” dives right in to address the nation’s top leadership with an open letter to President Obama. Among other things, the author asks him to consider adding a new position, writing, “I think the institution of governance took a large hit when the post of court jester went out of fashion.” He goes so far as to suggest the vice president as a candidate. Another passage questions the need for the United States to wage its current war, asking if the country has a self-destruct feature and needs to examine motives or be doomed to keep doing things like that forever, “the lesson being unlearned, like a national Groundhog’s Day,” the author writes.
Whether commenting on global warming – and the related issue of foreign oil and pollution – or conflict in the Middle East, the author isn’t afraid to raise potentially explosive solutions. For instance, the author suggests that the United States find a way to get all Israelis out of the Middle East, such as selling them Alaska for $1 if they would move to that state. Such a move would effectively eliminate al Qaeda’s stated reason for waging war so it’s soldiers would go home, “and the air would go out of that outfit like a punctured balloon.” In that scenario, the Israelis would have 10 to 15 times more space and could transform Alaska into a winter playground for the millions of Asians just across the ocean. The author’s thought-provoking prose provides a starting point for new ways of thinking about old problems.
