The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is an innovative dance and theatre production by Astra Dance Company, combining the art of silent films with dance, acrobatics, vivid projections and stage craft to retell the surrealistic masterpiece by Robert Wiene. This is a unique adaptation with plenty of surprises and twists.

Artistic Director, David Wilkinson and his creative team will entertain audiences in this mysterious implementation of dance, acting, circus arts and multi-media seamlessly woven... suspenseful tale of love, science, madness, love and murder at the turn of the century.

The film Caligari, made in 1920 Germany, is reckoned to be the foundation of the horror film genre. It begins when a traveling carnival hypnotist, Dr. Caligari and his future-telling somnambulist, Cesare, visit a fair in a small German town. Frightful events begin to occur and the townsfolk search for answers. Investigations discover a strange and dangerous trail, which leads deeper into this twisted world of shadows and dreams.

Caligari is a feast of the menacing and the macabre. The figures of authority are weird and sinister. The external world broods threateningly and surreal. This is a dance through wicked carnivals and circumstances most intriguing. Caligari creates a surreal experience that is lively and hauntingly beautiful. Astra has done a superb job in telling this story.

Astra Dance Company’s production of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari hews closely to the original. The film is “expressionistic” in visual style, in that objects are far from naturalistic and serve to embody the unstable emotions of the persons and the moment. This principle has also guided our original thrilling dance-drama.
