John Cooper, a partner with the Norfolk and Virginia Beach based personal injury firm Cooper Hurley, was reelected as a 2nd District Governor of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association (“VTLA”) at its annual conference March 30, 2012.
John Cooper is one of two District Governors from the Virginia Beach/Norfolk area elected to the VTLA Board of Governors.
The VTLA is the largest organization of its kind with about 2,200 members across the Commonwealth of Virginia, representing clients in a large number of litigation practice areas. It is the main group of plaintiff’s side personal injury lawyers in Virginia.
At the annual meeting, John also was appointed to be Co-Chair of the Litigation Support Committee. The Litigation Support Committee is a rapid response team ready to provide briefs and other help to Virginia lawyers on pressing issues arising in court in practice areas, like truck accidents, medical malpractice, or wrongful death case.
Fast moving issues like discovery of client’s social media sites, such as Facebook, are studied and addressed to help attorneys statewide.
John Cooper recently was published on the topic of personal injury lawyer ethics, in an article in the Journal of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association (Spring 2012).
The piece, entitled “Personal Injury Ethics Made Easy From Signup to Disbursement,” addressed issues such as client confidentiality, referral fees in Virginia, and settlement negotiation ethics. John reports, “I am proud to have my paper read across the Commonwealth by Virginia attorneys on such an important topic.”
