“This shows that our air cooled magnets have tramp iron extraction performance the same as our oil cooled type, but this is achieved with a power consumption approximately half that of the oil cooled type”.

Magquip South Africa's only manufacturer of self air cooled belt magnets with disc wound aluminium strip coils recently demonstrated the effectiveness of its large "energy efficient" ANS 230 SCC belt magnet.
A 16mm square by 300mm long steel bar buried under 550mm of coal was removed with the magnet suspended 650mm from the bottom of the coal burden.
Rory Flanagan Magquip's Managing Director said, “this shows that our air cooled magnets have tramp iron extraction performance the same as our oil cooled type, but this is achieved with a power consumption approximately half that of the oil cooled type”. The magnet is certified for installation in Atex Zone 21 dust hazardous location.
Erik de Witt Magquip's Technical Manager said that the next step for Magquip is flame proof certification for underground coal mining Group 1 methane gas hazardous location. This will not present a problem as the magnet is designed to be both explosion and flame proof. He also said, “That having shown the effectiveness of self air cooled magnets, he expects that competitors will follow suit and end the use of energy inefficient, environment unfriendly oil cooled magnets”. Flanagan's final comment - "with the electricity supply crisis we are asked to be Power Smart, at Magquip we believe we are".
Addition to existing range and a new range introduced
Magquip has now added to its standard range of circular core magnets the model ANS 280, designed for operation at a working gap of 600mm above a 3000mm wide belt. Weighing in at 14.6 tons air cooled or 18 tons oil cooled, with an electrical power consumption of 13.8 kW air cooled or 25.4 kW oil cooled, this completes the Magquip range of magnets for installation over belts with 3 or 5 roll idlers. A new leaflet with specifications for a range of rectangular core magnets, for use over belts with picking or feeder idlers, is now available from Magquip. Rory Flanagan Magquip's MD says that “today with the focus on energy efficiency and the environment, we will only produce an air cooled version”.
Certification for hazardous locations
Most coal mining operations pose a dust hazard to electrical equipment which must be certified for operation in such environment. Atex Zone 21 stipulates that a dust cloud is likely to be present occasionally in normal operation. Magquip self air cooled magnets can be used for this Zone. The maximum temperature on the magnet enclosure is 110ᵒC in a 40ᵒC ambient, Atex temperature classification T4. While this is fine for surface installations, underground coal mining operations require flameproof Group 1 methane gas certification. Rory Flanagan Magquip's MD says this is our next aim. “Our magnet enclosure is designed to be both explosion proof and flame proof”.
