Whether Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather or Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, the subject of love is often a critical part of mob narratives. The intersection of traditional romantic love and the untraditional life of a criminal makes for compelling drama, says author Joan P. Lloyd, who puts this explosive cocktail to use in her novel Pyzaono Brothers (published by AuthorHouse).

“The Mafia action is thrilling and exciting, but it is a love story,” says Lloyd. “You feel the passion and identify with the pain.”

In Pyzaono Brothers, Lloyd tells the story of Nelly McFarland. Orphaned as a teenager, Nelly moves to New York to live with her aunt. A new beginning in the big city awaits Nelly and is marked by a fateful encounter with a man named Joseph Barnatelli.

Nelly and Joseph begin a torrid love affair, but all the while Joseph is leading a double life – he’s married and the head of a powerful mob family in Brooklyn. When Joseph is marked for death by the man masking as a father figure, Joseph’s closest confidant and the syndicate’s head, Don Cello, Nelly finds herself caught in the crossfire.

Spanning the course of 20 years, Pyzaono Brothers is a sweeping romance set against the bustling backdrop of Brooklyn, Manhattan and Chinatown.

“It’s a passionate story of a couple caught in the midst of love, family and the Mafia,” says Lloyd. “As readers follow the story, they will feel the characters’ pain and sadness and have hope for their outcome.”
