To make it even more similar to a radio station, the service allows one to play silent music in the background. Soon it will be possible to enhance a stream with various sound effects, as well as create multiple streams from different groups of followed users.
The logic of the service is thus similar to that of Twitter, yet tailored to audio content. Unlike the text social networks, it allows users to share the most delicate tinges of their emotions.
It also constitutes a conceptually new broadcasting channel. Hubbub’s algorithm gathers input from many sources and then distributes it to a clearly segmented audience, takes advantage both of the messages’ brevity and absence of the need to browse for content constantly, which dramatically increases the probability for certain message to be heard.
“Our body is simply better adapted by nature to talking and listening than to reading and typing.” - says Hares Youssef, Hubbub’s angel investor and one of the service’s earliest adopters. -“Of course text is better for storing and systematizing information, but verbal communication always was and still remains better suited for instant information exchange. It’s also much handier to use your mobile device on the go for recording and posting a voice message, than for typing an email or tweet. ”
Yurij Riphyak, Hubbub’s CEO: “The human interface for working with sound must be substantially different from that designed for images and text. To make sound organic for social networking you need to rethink the way people communicate online. We started with an innovative algorithm of audio content management and thorough processing of signal, which ensures the highest quality of sound in the industry. Our next challenges are voice authentication to make the service secure for business use and the traditional problems of sound content: browsing, search, and indexation. We have also started work on a widget that can be embedded in web pages to make Hubbub a handy sound hosting tool for any purpose.”
Hubbub’s official launch has been announced at The Next Web conference in Amsterdam on April 27th – with very positive reception by experts and investors. The ambitious service aims to reach 100, 000 users by September 2012.
Hubbub is an innovative social platform for audio micro-blogging that allows users to record short sound messages and listen to the messages of followed users, which are combined in an uninterrupted radio-like stream. It's available both for the web interface at http://www.hubbub.fm and as an iPhone app. Hubbub GmbH, Tegethoffstraβe 7, A-1010 Wien, Austria. Contact: ear(at)hubbub(dot)fm
