Award-winning Australian journalist Stephanie Dale has found a way to make a very long walk work. In 2007, at the age of 48, Dale took time from her brand new marriage and joined her son Ben for a journey from Rome to Istanbul. It was during that time that she not only traveled the ancient and war torn countries of Europe and the Middle East but also the inner landscapes of her mind and her marriage. Stephanie took what she saw and experienced and put it down on paper. The result: My Pilgrim’s Heart
In an age where 'self-development' has become a product to be packaged and sold, Dale does her internal journeying her own way – on a pilgrimage. As she traverses war-torn lands, her physical journey reflects an inner one of finding her place in the world as a middle-aged woman baffled by the demands of marriage.
Dale’s themes are universal as My Pilgrim’s Heart examines the relationships between men and women: husband and wife, mother and adult son, and even Western women and Arabic men with a backdrop of Islam. Dale explores the power of money, female sexuality and the release of the subconscious through travel. Dale’s observations are entertaining, honest, and bold.
My Pilgrim’s Heart takes the reader to the back streets of some of the world’s great cities –Rome, Istanbul, Jerusalem – by the oldest means of travel on Earth: by foot. The reader gets to enjoy the finer details of travel - the sights, the food, the encounters between Dale and people on the road - all while Dale's honest, inner dialogue and personal transformation shines through. My Pilgrim’s Heart is more than a voyage; it is an invitation to take a similar walk.
Dale will be at the Augusta Public Library 823 Telfair Street, Augusta Ga. on May 15th, from 6-8 p.m. to discuss her book.
