Sullivan is an industry leader that educates and advocates for rate payers. They are a good fit for Chula Vista, a city that is on the cutting edge of environmental sustainability policies.
Chula Vista, CA (PRWEB) May 05, 2012
The City of Chula Vista has been a local and national leader in implementing programs aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enacting climate protection policies. Chula Vista, the second largest municipality in San Diego County, is one of the largest solar generators in our region. According to California Solar Initiative data, Chula Vista ranks second in government solar installations in San Diego County, and third in solar capacity with 4.4 megawatts installed.
Although still in the design phase, Chula Vista recently committed to expand its robust renewable portfolio with a one million watt solar project. According to the City, the project objective was to have cost-effective solar photovoltaic systems at municipal facilities and properties in order to reduce municipal energy costs and lower Chula Vista’s greenhouse gas emissions.
“Expanding the number of renewable energy systems, such as solar at municipal facilities, helps Chula Vista reduce its long-term utility costs and improve local air quality,” said Brendan Reed, Environmental Resource Manager for the City of Chula Vista. “The utility cost savings can be used in the future to support public safety and community services, such as Library and Recreation programs, which further improves quality of life.“
Local solar provider Sullivan Solar Power is currently designing and will install this project. Sullivan Solar Power, the top residential installer in San Diego Gas and Electric’s territory, will add an additional 20 employees to the team to complete the installations.
“I am pleased that Sullivan Solar Power will be working in Chula Vista,” said Chula Vista Councilwoman Pamela Bensoussan, “Sullivan is an industry leader that educates and advocates for rate payers. They are a good fit for Chula Vista, a city that is on the cutting edge of environmental sustainability policies.”
The one million watt solar project will be divided into six separate sites that utilize carports, roof mounted systems, and a shade structure. These solar arrays will be installed at the Public Works Center, Rohr Park, the Loma Verde, Salt Creek, and Montevalle Recreation Centers and the Civic Center .
“The City of Chula Vista is setting a precedent in our region with their goal to provide at least 20 percent of municipal energy demand with renewable energy generation,” said Sullivan Solar Power founder and President, Dan Sullivan, “The City is making a wise investment by going solar, saving a substantial amount of money while reducing its carbon footprint and educating citizens about solar power.”
The City has been a catalyst during this solar revolution in Chula Vista, inspiring residents to adopt solar power in addition to the municipal installations. In the fall of 2011, Sullivan Solar Power ran the Chula Vista Solar Program, where residents committed to install 204,415 watts of clean, renewable energy.
As a part of the Chula Vista Solar Program, Sullivan Solar Power partnered with GRID Alternatives, a non-profit organization that works with residents living within areas of revitalization to bring them solar power systems. As a component of this partnership, Sullivan is donating locally manufactured Kyocera solar panels to the non-profit for every participant who signed up for the program.
Chula Vista is leading by example by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing employment for local solar manufacture and installation companies.
