Priory Court

The Princeton Junior League chose Priory Court as its venue for the 2012 Designer Show House, a biennial event that brings together artists and designers from Northern New Jersey and Bucks County Pennsylvania, selected to transform the property over the course of a month into a showcase for their talents and ability to harmonize with the original architecture and each other. The Princeton Designer House is open through May 20, 2012.

A Show Stopping Venetian Plaster Entrance Looks Back to the Future

What was once a small, dark space illuminated only by indirect light from the adjacent foyer is now bathed an ambient glow reflected off Italian plaster walls and a gilded, Venetian plaster ceiling. Blomstrom and Scott had the intention of using natural, ancient materials and eclectic design elements that bridge past and future to create a design space that is at once classical and modern. To soften and formalize the space, the cinder block walls were plastered in a creamy Marmorino, and to highlight the arches and moldings, the stone surfaces were lime-washed and antiqued to produce a warm and aged patina. Complimenting the finishes, classical columns and medieval Sgraffito portraits pop as design elements. To draw the eye upward, the crown molding transitions to a ceiling border, created of Italian plaster with the same sandstone-toned finish.

The highlight of the design space is the ceiling, plastered in a shimmering Stucco Milano. The gold Venetian plaster ceiling glows like a candle-lit jewel, illuminated by hidden, low voltage indirect lighting built into a narrow cove molding. Warm light washes over the entire ceiling, drawing attention to its artistry. A custom-designed paisley modello, a special kind of stencil used in decorative plaster work, borrows from the rhythmic floral patterns employed by Art Nouveau artists. Graceful swirls were further embellished with gold leafing that highlights the details.
