The race is 1 and 1/4 miles long and is a Grade I stakes race for three-year-old Thoroughbred horses. Traditionally women wear elaborate hats and many race fans sip on mint juleps throughout the race. It is the first race of the Triple Crown. It is followed by the Preakness Stakes and then the Belmont Stakes. The horse must win all three races to win the Triple Crown. Only 11 horses have won the Triple crown since the inception of the triple crown in the late 1800's.
