Franklin Chang has long been a symbol of the progressive and intellectual potential of Costa Rica, and his amazing career was honored last week by his induction into the Hall of Fame for Astronauts in the NASA program. Chang, whose focus on research and education has become a national hero here in Costa Rica both for his achievements as a NASA astronaut, but also for his subsquent commitment to inspiring and leading cutting edge research here in Cost Rica.

Cheered on by a small but boistrous group of Costa Rican citizens and his family, Franklin Chang, was inducted into the hall of fame for Nasa Astronaut program this Friday, May 4, 2012. Changs illustrious career included ground breaking space walks and work on the international space station, for which Nasa has granted him this tremendous honor.

The international recognition culminates an amazing career, but Chang is perhaps more reknown on a national level in his home of Costa Rica for his inspiring generations of young students in the fields of science and technology. Long known as a country whose education and social care systems are among the most advanced in Latin America, Changs rise through the NASA ranks and subsequent groundbreaking research into plasma rocket systems here in Costa Rica, has made him an intellectual hero.

At his induction Chang stated, "I remember my heroes, those who helped me get to where I am today. Nobody can achieve anything without the help of others and today, there are children watching this and dreaming of what they could achieve."
