This week, ExtraCare Charitable Trust was granted full planning permission and will go ahead with its fifth build in Birmingham. A 5.6 acre site off Shaftmoor Lane in Tyseley will become home to 278 affordable homes and 18 health and leisure facilities and provide the over 55s with a more active and healthier lifestyle.
ExtraCare Care Homes have become renowned for the alternative lifestyle they offer residents. The communities are diverse and fun, fostering an independent environment for the older generation. The new village which will be built in Birmingham will transform older peoples’ lives across the city.
As it stands, construction is due to start in 2014 to 2015 and will be completed in 2017. The first Birmingham care home is currently over-subscribed, two more are under construction and another is in development. The fifth alternative care home will fulfil ExtraCare’s ambitions to complete an ambitious £200m village development programme.
The 278 available homes will surround a community based village with up to 18 health and leisure facilities including a restaurant, gym, IT centre, landscape gardens and well-being suite.
Chief Executive at ExtraCare Charitable Trust, Nick Abbey, said: “The Village is a landmark regeneration project for this site, providing an inspirational alternative to the traditional care home, community participation and a lifestyle that is affordable for all.”
