On May 11, 2012, Same-Day Surgery awarded its first Gold Star award to David Shapiro, MD, as part of its 35th anniversary celebration. The award was given at the Celebration Luncheon at the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (ASCA) annual meeting in Dallas. The award was presented by Mark Mayo, consulting editor for Same-Day Surgery, who is also executive director of the ASC Association of Illinois and director of ambulatory services at the Ambulatory Surgical Care Facility in Aurora, IL.
Same-Day Surgery newsletter is awarding Gold Stars to outstanding leaders and innovators in the outpatient surgery field. David Shapiro, MD, was selected for his multiple contributions to the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) field through leadership positions and activism. Shapiro serves as president of the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (ASCA) and the Ambulatory Surgery Foundation (ASF). He also is chair of the Ambulatory Surgery Center Quality Collaboration, which develops, measures, and publicly reports national ASC quality data.
“We selected Dr. Shapiro for this inaugural award based on his extensive contributions to the ambulatory surgery field at the local, state, and national levels,” said Joy Daughtery Dickinson, executive editor of Same-Day Surgery. “Dr. Shapiro has been an outstanding leader as the field has undergone dramatic growth and change.”
Shapiro is an anesthesiologist from Florida who has had extensive experience serving as a department chair, medical director, and board member of several ambulatory surgery centers. In addition, Shapiro served as the national medical director on behalf of ASC management corporations, prior to establishing his consulting firm, Ambulatory Surgery Co. His consulting practice encompasses areas related to clinical quality and regulatory compliance in the ambulatory surgery arena.
Shapiro is an active participant in surgery center industry activities, and he is a frequent speaker at state and national ambulatory surgery industry functions. He serves on the board of the Florida Society of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (FSASC).
Shapiro also served on the board of a publicly traded medical liability corporation (First Professionals Insurance Co.) and chaired their claims and underwriting committee for several years, until the sale of the company in 2011. Additionally, Shapiro conducts healthcare facility surveys on behalf of AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care) and Medicare.
