Air Squared Inc., a leader in oil-free scroll technology, has developed an oil-free 1 kW scroll expander, designed for use in a small-scale organic rankine cycle (ORC). Air Squared hopes that moving the expander into production will open doors for new research and development in waste heat recovery.
Typically used in large power plants, the function of an organic rankine cycle is simple: convert wasted heat into usable energy. With rising energy prices and ongoing environmental concerns, there is now an interest in applying this clean and efficient technology to new areas. With the help of Air Squared's patented scroll expander, wasted heat can be captured from exhaust gases, liquid cooling systems of internal combustion engines, fuel cells, solar collectors, and a number of other devices.
"We have been contacted by hundreds of companies and universities that want to explore small-scale organic rankine cycles," said Robert Shaffer, President of Air Squared. "The problem is, options for oil-free expanders are limited. Our scroll technology is the perfect solution."
By using a scroll design, Air Squared provides an expander option that is as affordable as it is effective. It is also oil-free, allowing for clean expansion without the impurities of oil. Running at 70% efficiency and weighing just 20 lbs, the compact expander is rated up to 1 kW. The rotary scroll design provides quiet, reliable, balanced, pulse-free operation with noise levels as low as 40 dBa.
