ArchCare, the continuing care community of the Archdiocese of New York deploys Passive Optical LAN Solution at its Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center (TCC) extended care facility in New York City.

AMT (Advanced Media Technologies) announced today that ArchCare has installed Passive Optical LAN (POL), an innovative fiber-based enterprise LAN solution from Motorola that simplifies the enterprise edge to deliver significant cost, power consumption and security improvements over traditional workgroup switch-based LANs. Archcare has deployed this POL solution at its Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center (TCC) extended care facility in New York City. The product is being utilized to distribute Ethernet to 2300 ports throughout a three-building facility over a fiber optic infrastructure.

Implementation of a new Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system on this campus location required the complete rebuild of the existing Local Area Network including all new structured cabling as well as installation of a new Wireless LAN for mobility applications. The fact that TCC is an older facility posed increased challenges for cabling, which included limited access to raceways, minimized routing options, reduced available space, and strict environmental cleanliness requirements. In this regard, POL proved especially beneficial due to its reduced space requirements and increased lifespan over conventional copper. Additionally, this TCC location contains ArchCare’s main data center, which hosts mission-critical applications for twelve ArchCare locations throughout the greater New York City area. Therefore, maintaining systems operability 24x7 during the LAN migration was a critical project requirement.

The project team was comprised of ArchCare IT, Peleton, and its cabling partners (GNI and Bayview Communications). The team worked closely to successfully implement the new LAN environment while maintaining a 24x7 operational status.

The key benefits delivered with this implementation include:

  •     Reduced capital investment requirement by 38%
  •     Increased number of data ports by 400%
  •     Reduced power requirements by 20%
  •     Implemented new WLAN network to support EMR mobility requirements
  •     Improved LAN performance, reliability and manageability
  •     Reclaimed existing IDF space for other purposes
  •     Increased life expectancy of the infrastructure

“We approached this LAN technology upgrade decision understanding we would be the first US health care facility to implement the POL technology. However, the significant capital investment savings, extensive carrier deployment with Verizon FIOS, and proven track records of technology providers such as Motorola and Peleton outweighed any early adopter risk factor. We are very pleased with the LAN migration and final result,” said Mitze Amoroso, VP Information Systems and CIO for ArchCare.
