In “Building a Reality-Based Relationship: The Six Stages of Modern Marriage” (published by iUniverse), author and veteran family and marriage therapist Dr. Liberty Kovacs presents an interactional and experiential book for couple to work on separately and together. Her goal is to assist couples in resolving issues from their past so they can forge ahead with a future together.
An excerpt from “Building a Reality-Based Relationship”:
Today, the roles of husband and wife are as vague as they have ever been. Marriage no longer guarantees financial security for women or domestic tranquility for men. Marriage isn’t even a prerequisite for parenthood in an era where as many as 40 percent of American children are born outside of a marriage relationship. In terms of finances, careers, sex, and child rearing, the modern marriage has no set roles other than those ingrained in us by centuries of history and by our experiences with our own families.
Drawing on her 40 years of professional experience, real-world cases and studies, Kovacs shares her model for the modern marriage. She maps the journey shared by couples across six unique and all-important marital stages: honeymoon, expectation, power struggle, seven-year-itch, reconciliation and acceptance. Along the way, couples develop a clearer understanding of their identities as individuals and of their fit together.
“I developed the ‘Tools of Marriage’ so couple can learn to communicate with each other,” Kovacs says, “and design a marriage that fits and suits them.”
