A new gay advocacy PSA recently released in Australia by the group GetUp! Action for Australia has been gaining a lot of attention in the media lately. The ad is shot in first person as viewers follow someone’s daily activities alongside a young man, from grocery shopping, to hanging out with friends on the beach, to the emotions of visiting a family member in the hospital – normal events everyone experiences. However, in the end of the spot, the man drops to one knee at a family gathering and proposes to the camera. That’s when viewers find out the eyes they were following was that of another man. The two men hug as he accepts, and the crowd of loving friends and family jump in excitement and glee. In her new book, I’ll Find a Way: A Mother’s Journey of Love and Acceptance for Her Gay Son (published by AuthorHouse), author and mother Deon M. Davis writes a touching and enlightening account of having a gay family member and her positive evolution as a result.
In I’ll Find a Way, Davis writes of when her son Rashad told her that he was gay. While a heavy blow at first, she soon learned to accept his sexual orientation and in turn grew from their experiences, pains and trials.
“My book tells the story of how one’s sexuality should not judge a child or a person’s character,” Davis says. “The love you have for your child or loved one should stay the same from the moment of first contact, i.e. birth.”
I’ll Find a Way is about the heart and soul of what love can do when confronted with life’s many challenges. Davis gives readers the message that while one’s sexual orientation may differ, one’s decision to love their children leaves no options. Her story also provides readers with advice on conquering and overcoming the fear many face having a gay family member.
