Head of Leading Opiate Detoxification Treatment Expresses Concern for Rise in Painkiller Use Among Fibromyalgia Patients

Medical Director for WAISMANN METHOD® rapid opiate detox treatment and pain management specialist, Dr. Michael Lowenstein, announced his support for National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day, taking place on May 12, 2012. An increasing number of fibromyalgia patients are being prescribed opiate painkillers to address their chronic pain symptoms, which is alarming to Dr. Lowenstein as prescription painkiller use is also surging nationwide.

Chronic pain comes in many forms, but fibromyalgia can be one of the most debilitating,” said Dr. Lowenstein. “We’re seeing more and more patients with opiate dependency issues that started because they were prescribed prescription painkillers to treat fibromyalgia. It’s important that we as a community recognize that fibromyalgia is a serious condition that can seriously affect a patient’s quality of life, however opiate painkillers should not always be the go-to treatment. Prescription painkillers are powerful, highly-addictive substances and should be used as a last resort under close supervision and care.”

Fibromyalgia is a musculoskeletal condition marked by widespread aching and pain in the muscles and joints. According to WebMD, fibromyalgia affects more than 12 million Americans, and women are 10 times more likely to suffer symptoms than men. Symptoms of fibromyalgia include widespread pain, extreme fatigue, depression, anxiety, headaches, tender points, sleeplessness and more. While the causes of fibromyalgia are unknown, many researchers believe the condition can occur from hormone imbalances that affect the central nervous system, as well as stress, illness or certain types of trauma.

National Fibromyalgia Awareness Day is sponsored by the National Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain Association (NFMCPA). On May 12 and throughout the month of May, the NFMCPA will work to raise awareness for the condition by offering activities and other opportunities for local communities to participate. About WAISMANN METHOD® Treatment

WAISMANN METHOD® rapid opiate detoxification treatment is a safe and proven protocol for opiate dependency that utilizes the most advanced medical techniques available. The rapid opiate detoxification treatment is carried out in a full-service hospital in Southern California by board-certified anesthesiologists while patients remain under deep sedation, so they experience minimal conscious withdrawal or suffering. Following medical treatment, patients are taken to Domus Retreat for an assessment to determine any underlying causes of dependency, and a customized aftercare plan is assigned to ensure a healthy and effective transition to life without opiates. WAISMANN METHOD® patients achieve an extraordinarily high success rate because they no longer fight the constant physical cravings for opiates that have led them to relapse in the past.
