We often hear about the sacrifices our service men and women make for our nation’s freedom, but there’s another group that also sacrifices- the families of our military heroes, said USO President and CEO Sloan Gibson.
Arlington, Va. (PRWEB) May 10, 2012
First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden are helping the USO and Full Circle Home surprise the wives, mothers, girlfriends and caregivers of hundreds of deployed troops who won’t get to make it home this Mother’s Day.
As part of their Joining Forces initiative, Mrs. Obama and Dr. Jill Biden welcomed Congressional spouses at the Vice President’s residence today for a day of service, assembling hundreds of Mother’s Day gift boxes filled with pampering products, gift cards, a charm bracelet, Welcome Home Garden seeds and most importantly, a love note from their deployed troops. The USO and Full Circle Home will deliver the gifts on behalf of deployed troops who requested to have the special woman in their life recognized.
“We often hear about the sacrifices our service men and women make for our nation’s freedom, but there’s another group that also sacrifices – the families of our military heroes,” said USO President and CEO Sloan Gibson. “From the long periods of separation to sometimes having to do double duty during their loved ones deployment, wives and mothers of our troops endure a lot for our country. This Mother’s Day we’re grateful to be partnered with Full Circle Home and Joining Forces, who are also committed to lifting the spirits of troops and their families.”
“As a military mom, this service project is especially important to me – and I know will be so meaningful to the wives, mothers, girlfriends and caregivers with deployed loved ones,” said Dr. Jill Biden. “First Lady Michelle Obama and I started Joining Forces last year as a way to honor, recognize, and support not just our service men and women and veterans – but also our military families who sacrifice so much.”
The First Lady and Dr. Biden are calling on Americans across the country to honor military moms. Share your words of gratitude on Twitter with the hashtag #ThankAMilitaryMom, dedicate your Facebook status, and find more ways to say thanks at JoiningForces.gov.
Today’s event also marked the launch of the USO’s partnership with Full Circle Home, a non-profit organization that was founded in 2007 by military mother Vickie Durfee, after her deployed son requested her help in sending his girlfriend a Christmas gift.
“It's an honor to have the First Lady and Dr. Biden join Full Circle Home and the USO in our joint effort to support the women that support our troops,” said Full Circle Home Founder and Executive Director Vickie Durfee. “These gifts mean so much to the women here at home missing their loved one and the deployed troop who wants so much to show the woman in their life they are thinking of them. Our collaboration with the USO has been wonderful as it has enabled Full Circle Home to help hundreds more of our deployed heroes send their gifts and love to THEIR heroes at home.”
To date, Full Circle Home has delivered more than 4,000 Mother’s Day and Christmas boxes. The gift boxes assembled at Thursday’s event will be combined with others packaged at events across the country. They’ll be delivered to mothers and spouses of deployed troops in time for Mother’s Day. About Full Circle Home
Full Circle Home is an American non-profit organization whose goal is to support the special women of our Armed Service members during their separation from loved ones deployed overseas. Through donations and corporate partnerships, Full Circle Home arranges for gift boxes to be sent on behalf of service members to the home front. These boxes, filled with a variety of pampering products, and most importantly, a note from their deployed loved one, help to comfort and support military wives and mothers during heart-wrenching separation.
Working primarily around the winter holiday season and Mothers' Day, Full Circle Home accepts requests from service members, solicits contents for the packages, wraps them, and ships them off to the surprised and delighted women of our service members. Started in 2007 by Vickie Durfee, the mother of a marine, Full Circle Home has organized volunteers to send thousands of gift boxes to women across the United States and even to bases in Iraq and Afghanistan.
