Is small the new luxury? Many high-end consumers and interior designers seem to think so, as they’re increasingly furnishing their homes with products from smaller, artisanal manufacturers.

“People today are looking for more unique designs and are much more discerning about quality,” notes Carolina Con, President of Gracious Style, an online retailer which specializes in the luxury segment of the home furnishings industry.

According to Con, some of the smaller manufacturers whose products are favored by this shift include Lance Wovens, a small Connecticut leather goods manufacturers with a line of woven leather pillows, Waylande Gregory, an artisanal maker of porcelain accessories for the home, and Fresco Towels, a Los Angeles-based manufacturer of bath towels with bold designs inspired by everything from Persian carpets to French damask wallpaper.

While echoing the trend towards artisanal foods or local fashion designers, this shift towards smaller manufacturers for the home also has reasons which are unique to the industry. During the recession, many of the larger manufacturers cut back on product design, choosing instead to develop more ordinary goods at lower qualities to cut costs. As a result, smaller manufacturers who specialize in objects with stylish designs and higher quality are better positioned to benefit from the rebound.

Retailers looking to capitalize on this trend will find that they need to invest heavily to educate consumers about such products. “Having worked with smaller manufacturers for over a decade, we understand that their appeal lies in their unique style and quality, so it's been crucial to educate our clients and explain the stories behind each collection,” notes Con.

Following is a sampling of the new class of artisanal manufacturers:
