In Andrew C. Watzek’s new Western novel “The Hunt” (published by Trafford Publishing), a father must teach his four daughters to survive in 1800s Arizona after the death of their mother.
When Adam “Mac” McCulough loses his wife, Abby, he calls on his longtime friend, Ezra Hawks, a half-White Mountain Apache, to help him. Together, the men teach the daughters to shoot, hunt, fish, track and survive in the wild.
An excerpt from “The Hunt”:
“Mac sat on the edge of the bed and leaned over to kiss his wife on her cold forehead. He held her hand in his, and he asked her how he was going to tell their children that their mother would never see them again. He asked Abby how she could leave him when the girls were so young and he was so unsure what to do. He looked at Abby as if she would just sit up and answer all of his questions.
After many minutes, Mac stood up, leaned over to kiss his wife one more time, took a deep breath, and turned to leave the room. Doc was waiting for him in the parlor.”
Despite their successes, when Mac is killed the girls must band together and hunt down their father’s killers. Their father has taught them well how to survive, but are they prepared to pay the cost their revenge may require?
At its heart, “The Hunt” is, as Watzek says, a book that “… truly explores the relationships between fathers and daughters.”
