Relating her teaching approach with the many memorable students she worked with over her years as a public school teacher, Laurel Lorraine Lancer delivers “Love Is in This Room: Memories of Teaching Special Kids” (published by Trafford Publishing), her new book in which she shares the love she felt for her students and for teaching.
With 45 years of experience working with special education students in the public school system under her belt, Lancer has seen many students come and go. In “Love Is in This Room,” Lancer invites readers into her life and her classroom as she shares intimate stories from her career. She built special relationships with both her students and her colleagues and is a vocal advocate for the merits of this level of personal and professional investment. Many close relationships that she gained in teaching and counseling her students have endured for many years.
During her time as a teacher, the public school system continuously evolved before her eyes, and “Love Is in This Room” shares some of the changes she witnessed and how she perceived those changes. For instance, at one point she decries the “robotic” transformation of teachers by current education methods.
But “Love Is in This Room” is more than an analysis of public school system policies. It is her personal account of working with students who were emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, autistic, intellectually disabled, and gifted. She shares some of the changes that her school system underwent in the special education department while providing poignant stories about her individual experiences with students.
