According to the organization ChildHelp, over 3 million reports of child abuse are made every year in the United States. Jeanne Byrns’ life was one such nightmare of physical, emotional, sexual and mental abuse. “The Eyes Have It” (published by Trafford Publishing) is not simply a journal of wrongs and injustice, but that of her overcoming and changing her life. Her struggles to understand why she was a victim and to forgive her tormentors helped her become a stronger person and a person other wounded survivors turn to for comfort.
Byrns was inspired to write “The Eyes Have It” to help abuse survivors, to let them know they don’t have to settle for a pain-filled, helpless life. “Just because you suffered in the past, you need not settle for less than the best,” she says. “You are a wonderful human being with potential to become anything you want.
An excerpt from “The Eyes Have It”:
From then on, Joy, Ray, and I listened more fearfully and came if we even thought we were being called, no matter what we were doing. We dropped whatever it was that held our attention and ran for home in fear and trembling, never knowing what lay in wait when we arrived. We were taught, carefully taught, to “be afraid unless we obeyed.” At least, obedience is what Daddy called it. To us the lesson was not about exact and immediate obedience; it was about fear. We responded instantly because we were so afraid. We lived with that fear all the time when we were home. It was a natural state of being for us, like curiosity or security or comfort is for many children. We were being trained to accept fear as a way of life.
“Survivors deserve a better life and this is possible.”
