Our faith can and should lead us all to a path of unconditional love for our children. By telling my story with love, compassion and fierce honesty, I pray this book offers hope, solace and connection to other families.

Shari Johnson’s new book Above All Things: The Journey of an Evangelical Christian Mother and Her Gay Daughter, about Johnson’s crisis of faith after her daughter, Cholene, came out as a lesbian and her struggle to accept it, will be released on May 21, 2012, published by Changing Lives Press. In its call for compassion and love, Above All Things aims to help family members and friends of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people to understand the difficulties that their loved ones face, as well as to help LGBT individuals cope with the challenges of coming out.
“I wrote this book with a sense of purpose—to reconcile families that have been torn apart over this issue, and to reach parents of LGBT children, especially those with evangelical Christian roots, to let them know that they are not alone,” said Johnson. “Our faith can and should lead us all to a path of unconditional love for our children,” continued Johnson. “By telling my story with love, compassion and fierce honesty, I pray this book offers hope, solace and connection to other families who are facing a child’s coming out and dealing with what seems like a contradiction of faith and the challenges that I went though,” concluded Johnson.
Said Ellen Ratner, Johnson’s daughter-in-law, renowned national political journalist and commentator and co-founder of Changing Lives Press:
“This book personifies Changing Lives Press’s mission. Shari’s story will not only inspire anyone who reads it, it will turn on its head the notion that deeply held religious beliefs would lead parents anywhere but toward full acceptance of their LGBT children. In a world where all too often the argument is positioned as “Gay vs. God,” Shari’s book shows us there is a very different path; one where religion and acceptance for one’s LGBT children is exactly what so many faiths call people toward. This book will give readers the chance to learn, laugh, cry and in the end, come to terms with the realities of a child coming out, through Shari’s amazing journey to loving her daughter – and my wife – Cholene, above all things.”
Shari Johnson's world turned upside down the night her 37-year-old daughter called and told her that she was gay. This just couldn't be possible. Cholene had always been the hero-Air Force Academy graduate, second woman to fly the U-2 spy plane, captain for United Airlines - she cried, begged, pleaded with God to change Cholene, but he changed Shari instead. It seems that he was much more concerned about Shari's lack of love than he was about Cholene's homosexuality. This book tells Shari's personal story: from the night she received the call from her daughter, Cholene, telling her mother that she was gay; through the marriage of her daughter to her partner, Ellen Ratner; to the present, where she is president of the PFLAG Odessa (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays). This poignant story is sometimes humorous, sometimes heart breaking, but always honest.
After ending a twenty-two-year career as a dental hygienist, Shari turned to her passion of writing for consolation, which led to an even greater passion for editing. She is currently an editor and copyeditor for Changing Lives Press. Her first book, Above All Things, will be published in May of 2012. Shari lives in Odessa, Texas, with her husband, James.
