Annapolis, MD (PRWEB) May 12, 2012
All the magic, mystery and mythic power of dragons will arise as a dynamic crowd of healers, artists, community-builders, mystics, activists, and seekers evoke their inner fire in “Awakening Imagination for Transformation: A Gathering of Creation Spirituality Communities,” scheduled July 27-29 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockville in Rockville, Maryland.
Hosted by Evolve Chesapeake (http://www.evolvechesapeake.com) and Creation Spirituality Communities (http://originalblessing.ning.com), the radically inclusive weekend features a keynote by the (r)evolutionary theologian and author Matthew Fox, Ph.D., along with workshops on community-building, spiritual activism, art as meditation and body prayer.
Evoking archetypal images of dragons through art and experiential workshops, the weekend offers an opportunity to reach beyond the “either/or” of the reptilian brain to dance in an inclusive “both/and” perspective, embracing diversity and interconnectedness to achieve global healing.
Building spiritual community is the focus of the conference on Friday, with speakers from regional Creation Spirituality communities sharing stories of celebrating awe and wonder, navigating pain, conflict and loss, co-creating new solutions, and bearing witness for social, environmental, and gender justice.
Dr. Fox’s Friday night keynote is followed by Saturday workshops on developing a mature, mystical, creative, and socially engaged spiritual practice in the age of Occupy. The day climaxes with “Dancing with Dragons,” the first-ever D.C.-area Cosmic Celebration ritual. It is inspired by the famous post-modern “Cosmic Mass,” (http://www.thecosmicmass.org) which Dr. Fox developed 16 years ago to incorporate multi-media audio/video streaming, interspiritual mythology, and dance-based worship. First offered in Oakland, CA, the Cosmic Mass is now celebrated internationally.
The gathering ends with a colorful and reverential Sunday visit to the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial, followed by a picnic and Sacred Gathering at Evolve Chesapeake, the Chesapeake Creation Spirituality Community, located at 351 Bestgate Road in Annapolis, MD.
Patty McGrath, D.Min., co-chair of the Conference Planning Committee, says, “These gatherings are so full of joy and love – they offer a safe place to reflect and commit. We are very proud to bring Matthew Fox to the Washington, DC area to bring his prophetic inclusive message of God’s radical justice. We will offer workshops on building sustainable communities, celebrate the four Spiritual Paths, dance, drum, create dragons, and - in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King - ride the arc of the Universe toward justice.”
Dr. Wayne Schwandt, Co-Chair of the Conference and the Spiritual Leader of Evolve Chesapeake, the Chesapeake Creation Spirituality Community, says, “Our Community in Annapolis draws on the ancient traditions of Creation Spirituality to nurture the individual’s spiritual journey, celebrate the Universe as the body of the Divine, celebrate that God is in all things and all things are in God, and work for justice and peace as the Great Work of our journey. We support the emergence of the prophet, artist and mystic in everyone.”
The Reverend Matthew Fox, Ph.D., is an internationally acclaimed spiritual theologian, an Episcopal priest, and an activist who was a member of the Dominican Order for 34 years. The leading proponent of the ancient mystical Judeo-Christian tradition of creation-based spirituality in this century, he is the author of 30 books, including the culture-changing Original Blessing, as well his most recent works, Christian Mystics: 365 Readings and Meditations, and the searing expose, The Pope's War. He is currently co-authoring a book with Adam Bucko of The Reciprocity Foundation on intergenerational spiritual activism in the age of Occupy
Creation Spirituality Communities is a network of communities ranging from intentional groups to alternative churches, which are grounded in the tenets of Creation Spirituality and revere the sacredness of all creation. Through study, ritual, celebration and action, these communities support justice, compassion, transformation and sustainability for the Universe and for all living beings.
Evolve Chesapeake, a, radically inclusive Creation Spirituality community based on the principle of Original Blessing, offers a healing counter voice to the dominant fall/redemption model of Christianity. Basing the liturgical year on four paths or lenses to experience the Divine: awe and wonder; emptying; creativity; and transformation, Evolve Chesapeake offers Communion to all as a rite of divine hospitality.
