Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Sacramento

The Sacramento office of international law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP is taking part in a friendly competition with law firm Mennemeier, Glassman & Stroud in an effort to raise funds for breast cancer. The two law firms each had an attorney diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of 2011. For Greenberg Traurig, this is not the first time that one of its own has been diagnosed.

As a way of showing support to their colleagues who were recently diagnosed with the disease, each law firm formed a team to participate in the upcoming Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Sacramento taking place on May 12, 2012. The team captains set a goal for their teams to raise at least $5,000, but the stakes were raised when Greenberg Traurig’s TEAM CAROL issued a challenge to Mennemeier’s TEAM PEG to see which team can raise more money for the upcoming race.

Greenberg Traurig’s TEAM CAROL is named after Carol Livingston, a shareholder and former co-managing shareholder of the Sacramento office. TEAM PEG is named after Peg Carew Toledo, a partner at Mennemeier, Glassman and Stroud.

“When Peg asked me to donate to her team at Mennemeier, I told her that I had an even better idea,” said Greenberg Traurig’s team captain Nancy Doig. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 31 and was told that with the same diagnosis five years earlier, my chances of survival would have been very low. Especially in light of what Carol is going through, Greenberg Traurig looks forward to growing this friendly competition and making it an annual occurrence in the Sacramento legal community.”

According to the Susan G. Komen website, one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among women in the United States ages 40 to 59. It is the most prevalent cancer in the world today, with about 1.3 million people diagnosed annually. The exact cause of the disease is unknown and there is no cure.
