Vieques Against Crime to present honors, awards to outstanding officers and officials

The entire staff of the Policía de Puerto Fajardo Regional Command will visit Vieques with Assistant Superintendent Leovigildo Vazquez on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, to publicly remember and recognize all of the Puerto Rican police officers who died in the line of duty during 2011. National Law Enforcement Memorial Day is always celebrated on May 15th in Washington, DC, with celebrations, memorials and candlelight vigils in memory of the brave men and women who gave their lives to protect the citizens of their communities.

“Many of the police departments around the world celebrate Police Week with the United States, and this year Puerto Rico will honor that tradition here on Vieques Island,” said Sandy Malone, founder of the non-profit victim’s advocacy group Vieques Against Crime (VAC), pointing out that this week was already designated Vieques Island Police week. “We will honor the sacrifices of the fallen officers and we will present awards to the most outstanding officers in the region as well. This is a time to honor the daily sacrifices made by both police officers and their families every day.”

“This is the first time in 30 years that the Vieques community has honored the police officers, and we are proud to acknowledge both the hard work and sacrifices of Policia de Puerto Rico officers and their families,” said Fajardo Regional Commander Antonio Lopez Figueroa. “This is yet another huge step in building a strong relationship between the community and the police on Vieques Island. It’s just one more example for the rest of Puerto Rico demonstrating how community policing effectively reduced crime on Vieques Island. This is why crime is down 31% in Vieques.”

VAC will be presenting honors to the Policia de Puerto Rico Agents of the Year for 2011, the Vieques Municipal Police of the Year, and to the Agent of the Quarter for each district in the Fajardo region, and entirely new honor created by VAC. There will also be some special honors for high ranking officials.

There is a VIP luncheon for honorees, police officials, community leaders and the media at the W Hotel immediately following the ceremony in the plaza. Commander Lopez will be announcing specific crime reduction goals and challenges. Media wishing to attend should email sandynmalone(at)gmail(dot)com to RSVP or for more information, or to schedule an interview with police officials or VAC representatives.

Vieques Against Crime (VAC) is a non-profit, citizen-funded organization dedicated to making Vieques Island the safest Island in the Caribbean.
