Author and healthcare professional Cari Sommer says, “Nursing epitomizes to me the true meaning of life – people helping each other.” It is this love for her profession that she shares in her new book, “A Gal in a Proud Profession” (published by Trafford Publishing).
“A Gal in a Proud Profession” tells of one woman’s life in medicine, a profession that Sommer loved dearly. Having attended nursing school in 1947, she provides a unique history of the evolution of healthcare.
Originally written in 1993, Sommer feels that the health care field has changed quite radically. “As a hospital patient a year ago, I was dismayed by the absence of both physical and emotional care,” she says, “much of it replaced by computers.”
Excerpt from the prologue of “A Gal in a Proud Profession”:
“As I look over my fifty years nursing, I can see that it has been the best part of my life. I didn’t mean for it to be. I meant for my home and my family to be my top priority and fulfillment. But sadly my personal life did not have the happy ending I hoped for. But nursing has given it the gratification and meaning lacking in other areas.”
“A Gal in a Proud Profession” is a prime example of an old-fashioned work ethic and the caring for others, something that is often missing in today’s world.
“Helping others is not a one way street. The gratification one feels in doing so is an abundant reward.”
