Across from Fort Walton Beach High School in Viking Professional Park stands a tutoring center dedicated to bringing out students' underlying logic when attempting math. The Mathnasium opened January 30, 2012 for grades 2 - 12 with the resounding belief that students don't hate math; they hate not understanding it. So far, the Mathnasium staff has grown their student body from 2 to over 20 students, and with summer on the horizon, they're preparing techniques to keep pupils mentally active over the break.

Upon their initial meeting, the Mathnasium center director assesses a student's math skills, then customize a learning plan developed specifically to supplement the individual's mathematical shortcomings. They use the proprietary "Mathnasium Method" to concoct a curriculum that they feel will yield the quickest cognitive apprehension of trouble mathematical concepts. The final aim is to engender student confidence in their ability to approach the same math areas at which they used to balk.

"We help by teaching students math in a way that makes sense to them," asserts proprietor Billy Lawson, Jr. His program has recorded the approval of both student and parent. The staff reports common remarks of satisfaction from students, who they say testify higher test grades, SAT scores or simply how much they've learned that day at Mathnasium. "This approach completely changed how I think about math," admitted Suzanne Stein, parent and 5th grade teacher.

For the summer months, the Mathnasium is stressing the importance of an educational alternative for the Greater Fort Walton Beach Community. Studies indicate that students who do not remain mentally active over the summer break can lose from two to three months worth of their previous grades' educational material. Additionally, Mathnasiusm students may be able to grasp material they may not have understood during the regular school year, then get a head start to ease the workload of the next grade.

Save for certain federal holidays, the Mathnasium stays open year-round. They operate Monday through Friday from 2 PM to 7 PM, and on Saturday by appointment.
