Prime Advantage, a group purchasing company for more than 750 small and midsized manufacturers, was recognized by a supply chain industry magazine for its outstanding work on behalf of a member company. The recognition results in Prime Advantage being selected as one of the top 100 supply chain projects of the past year.

Prime Advantage, the leading buying consortium for midsized manufacturers, announced that it was named to the eleventh annual listing of the Supply and Demand Chain Executive 100, highlighting 100 great supply chain projects.

Launched 11 years ago, Supply & Demand Chain Executive announced its first "100" list of supply chain solution providers, consultants and other organizations that were helping lead the way in transforming companies' supply and demand chains. This year, the magazine focused the criteria for its "100" feature on supply chain transformation projects that have had a significant impact on the companies going through the implementations.

Prime Advantage was selected for its work with Member company Berner Food & Beverage of Dakota, IL. Berner Food & Beverage, which makes approximately 70 percent of all private label cheese sauces and spreads in North America, 85 percent of private label salsa con queso products, and 90 percent of all private label aerosol canned cheese products, was encountering a frustrating problem at the end of its production line, where case shrink wrap designed to cover and seal its finished products was continually getting stuck in the wrapping machine the company had recently purchased. When wrap would get stuck in the machine, it immediately halted the production line.

Berner was undergoing an urgent search outside its existing supplier base for a solution to this expensive problem. Around the same time, the company also joined Prime Advantage to gain access to savings on purchased goods as well as identify qualified supplier options. Prime Advantage introduces its members to the group’s best-in-class supply base through multiple channels, including the use of experienced regional account managers and through its semi-annual conferences, which have proven to be an easy way to reach out to multiple suppliers in a short period of time.

One-on-one meetings take place between members and suppliers. These scheduled meetings are based on knowledge of Berner Food & Beverage’s needs and strategies, as well as the suppliers’ ability to fulfill those needs. After a conference, members have often met one-on-one with as many as 45 existing or potential suppliers, while also significantly increasing their network through other informal meetings that took place.

“While attending our first conference, our Regional Account Manager suggested Gulf Great Lakes as an option to address our shrink film supply option,” said Kimberly Newton, former vice president of supply chain and engineering, Berner Food & Beverage. “While meeting with the Gulf Great Lakes representative, he was able to knowledgeably speak to the machine challenges, film alternatives, and potential starting points for addressing the increasingly expensive problem. Our Prime Advantage membership allowed us to quickly find an endorsed supplier we could feel confident in working with due to the streamlined process for vetting new suppliers.”
