MTS Offers Temposonics® Sensors with CANBUS Interface in New 200 Inch Length

By extending the available length of our sensors and offering the CANbus interface, we are giving equipment manufacturers access to magnetostrictive technology in applications that have, in the past, had to rely on substandard or more expensive solutions.

MTS Systems Corp., Sensors Division has announced that M-Series Temposonics® Sensors are now available in lengths as long as 200 inches using an CANbus interface. The longer length and additional protocol further the company’s goal to provide a deeper product offering of magnetostrictive sensors for the mobile hydraulic marketplace.

“We are focusing on advances to our product lines that offer options not currently available in the marketplace today,” Haubold “Hub” vom Berg, Technical Market Manager for Mobile Hydraulics at MTS, explained. “By extending the available length of our sensors and offering the CANbus interface, we are giving equipment manufacturers access to magnetostrictive technology in applications that have, in the past, had to rely on substandard or more expensive solutions.”

Developed specifically for mobile hydraulic applications, M-Series Temposonics® sensors are used in hydraulic cylinders on mobile equipment where accurate control and measurement, as well as resistance to the elements and shock, are needed. These products meet ISO14982 standards for agricultural and forest machines and ISO7637-0/1/2 standards for road vehicles. They are embedded inside a hydraulic cylinder to provide better resistance to environmental factors.

“Traditionally, applications requiring longer lengths were limited to technologies that could not offer the precision and durability of a magnetostrictive sensor or that were prohibitively expensive,” vomBerg said. “These newer products, and the addition of new interface options, give them access to a new level of accuracy and precision.”

The sensor can withstand shocks of up to 100g (IEC 68-2-27) and vibration of up to 15g (IEC 68-2-6). The sensor itself can withstand EMI of up to 200V/m but even more when installed in a hydraulic cylinder. Using the MTS proprietary M12x1 connection system the cylinder can provide IP69k environmental protection.
