One of the most pivotal episodes in recent history, the Arab Spring led to the unthinkable: the downfall of longstanding autocratic regimes, including that of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi in Libya. Lindsey Hilsum offers a riveting mix of eyewitness reporting and nuanced history in “Sandstorm: Libya in the Time of Revolution.”

Hilsum was reporting from Libya shortly after the uprising begin in February of last year, and was there when Gaddafi was killed. In “Sandstorm,” she vividly shows how the action unfolds through the eyes and experiences of the resistance fighters of Libya and the exile community that returned home to take part in daring acts of civil disobedience. Previously unable to speak openly about life under Gaddafi, men and women of all ages and walks of life open up to Hilsum.

Hilsum is a gifted storyteller, and “Sandstorm” is a formidable chronicle of the Gaddafi endgame, and an indispensible roadmap to understanding what lies ahead for the people of the Middle East.

Lindsey Hilsum is the International Editor for Britain’s Channel 4 News, and appears regularly on “PBS Newshour” and CNN. She has covered major international events of the past two decades, including the wars in Iraq, Kosovo, and Afghanistan, as well as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the genocide in Rwanda. She spent the last year reporting on the Arab Spring from Egypt, Bahrain, and Libya. Her reporting has won several prizes, including an Emmy and the Foreign Press Association Award, as well as recognition from Amnesty International and Britain’s Royal Television Society.

The program with Lindsey Hilsum is a St. Louis County Library ‘Buzz’ Westfall Favorite Author Series presentation.
